Melbourne's winter nights have taken on a new glow. Lightscape, the after-dark illuminated trail through the Royal Botanic Gardens, has returned for 2026 and runs until 2 August — turning the Melbourne Gardens into a landscape of colour, light and music once the sun goes down.
Visitors follow a winding trail of brand-new light installations created by leading artists from around the world, including Australian and First Peoples talent. The gardens describe it as "a magical after-dark experience unlike anything else in the city this winter".
The festival runs Wednesday to Sunday nights, and every night through the winter school holidays. Entry is timed in 15-minute sessions from the Observatory Gate on Birdwood Avenue, opposite the Shrine of Remembrance, and warm refreshments — mulled wine, hot chocolate and treats — are dotted along the route.
Lightscape first lit up on 12 June and continues to 2 August. Adult tickets start at $36, with concession, child and flexible options available through Ticketek, and sessions run into the evening across the winter run.
It is one of a clutch of light-and-fire events lighting up the city through the cold months, but with its setting among the heritage trees and lawns of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Lightscape has become one of Melbourne's signature winter nights out — a slow, glowing wander rather than a dash between attractions.
