Some of the world's most famous jewels have gone on show in Melbourne. CARTIER: Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2026 opened at NGV International on 12 June, gathering nearly 400 jewels, tiaras and timepieces in what the Victorian Government has billed as the largest Cartier display ever seen in Australia.
The exhibition traces more than a century of the French maison's craft — necklaces, brooches, vanity cases and design drawings among them — and lingers on the pieces that made Cartier a household name: its sculptural Panther brooch, the geometric Tank watch, and the story of the Hope diamond, once acquired by Pierre Cartier. Many of the treasures on display have been worn by royalty and Hollywood stars, from Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Windsor.
The show has been curated by Helen Molesworth, senior jewellery curator at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, and staged at NGV International on St Kilda Road, where it forms part of the gallery's winter programme until 4 October.
For the state, the drawcard is as much economic as cultural. Melbourne Winter Masterpieces has run since 2004 and drawn more than eight million visitors; this year's French Impressionism show has already pulled almost 260,000, while the record-breaking Yayoi Kusama exhibition welcomed more than 570,000.
"Not only do the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions provide a dazzling experience, but they are also important to the state's economy — supporting local jobs and businesses in the CBD and across Victoria," said Steve Dimopoulos, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, in announcing the show. Cartier, he said, would "again reinforce Melbourne's reputation as Australia's cultural capital".
Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks called the exhibition "a brilliant addition to our arts and cultural calendar, providing tourists and locals alike a unique opportunity to see treasures never before seen in Australia". Tickets start at $19 for children and $43 for adults, with concession and NGV member rates available.
