If you own a car in Victoria and have not yet claimed 20 per cent off your registration, the clock is nearly up. Applications for the state government's rego rebate close on Friday 31 July, and once the portal shuts the discount is gone for good.
The rebate hands back 20 per cent of what you paid to register a light vehicle over the past year. In dollar terms that is up to $186 back on a single car, and up to $372 if you claim on two. It is not means-tested and it is not automatic — you have to apply.
Eligibility is broad. The rebate covers personal light vehicles under 4.5 tonnes — cars, station wagons, four-wheel drives, motorcycles, utes, vans and light trucks — that are registered in your name as an individual. You can claim for up to two vehicles, the registration has to be current when you apply, and the amount is calculated on registration payments made between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.
Claiming is meant to take only a few minutes. Applications go through Service Victoria, either on its website or through the app; you log in or create an account, confirm your details, and lodge the claim. Most applications are processed and paid within 30 days.
It has been one of the government's more popular cost-of-living measures. More than one million Victorians applied within 48 hours of the window opening on 1 June, according to the government, and the claims have kept coming across the two months since.
The rebate was rolled out as part of a broader mid-year cost-of-living package that also delivered half-price public transport fares. The two are separate offers — one comes off your car registration, the other off your myki — but both were pitched at the same squeezed household budgets.
"I'm thrilled that over one million Victorians have already claimed 20% off their rego," said Minister for Government Services Ingrid Stitt. "If you haven't yet – it takes minutes." Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ros Spence framed the payment as "real help that is putting money back in the pockets of Victorians."
For anyone who has been meaning to get to it, the message is simple: the money is only there until Friday. After 31 July the portal closes and the 20 per cent comes off nobody's rego. A few minutes on Service Victoria this week is the difference between banking up to $372 and missing out entirely.
