American football's biggest league is coming to the 'G. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday 11 September 2026 in the first NFL regular-season game ever staged in Australia.

The fixture is the centrepiece of a multi-year deal the Allan Labor Government struck with the NFL, backed by Visit Victoria, to bring regular-season games to Melbourne. Premier Jacinta Allan announced the agreement at the MCG in February 2025, framing it as the newest addition to a major-events calendar that already boasts an international tennis grand slam, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Boxing Day Test.

"Another touchdown for the sporting capital of Australia," Allan said. "Only Victoria can host an international grand slam, only Victoria can experience the Formula 1 Grand Prix, only Victoria can break records with the Boxing Day Test — and Victoria is now the only city in Australia to host the NFL."

The Rams will serve as the designated home team against the 49ers, with kick-off set for around 10.35am AEST — a Friday-morning slot in Melbourne timed to land in US primetime on the Thursday night.

Interest has been enormous. More than 151,000 people have registered for the Melbourne game — a figure that jumped by more than 50,000 once the 49ers were confirmed as the Rams' opponent. Australia's NFL following has grown to 6.6 million fans, and US leisure travellers spent $239 million in Victoria last year, the kind of visitor economy the government hopes the game will amplify.

"It is a massive coup — thousands of jobs, millions of people watching our state, a huge boost to the Victorian economy," said Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements. Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the game would "shine an international spotlight on Melbourne, bringing even more visitors from across the globe" when the two Californian rivals run out at the MCG.
